THE FACTS
· Studies found that people aged 18 to 24 and households with incomes over $100,000 throw away the most food
· Main reasons include; food being left in the fridge or freezer too long and people not finishing their meals
· Australians throw out approximately $8 billion worth of edible food every year
· Australia is the second highest producer of waste per person in the world at approximately 650 kg per person
· The average Australian family makes enough rubbish in one year to fill a three-bedroom house from floor to ceiling

$1036 is wasted annually by the average household - this is enough to feed the average household for over a month or pay off about six months of the average family's electricity bill.

THE FOOD WASTE SOURCE
The UK-based Institution of Mechanical Engineers, which carried out the study, says poor storage, strict sell-by dates, bulk offers and consumer fussiness cause the waste. The report says half of the food purchased in Europe and the US is thrown away after it is bought. The Institution's engineering director Dr. Colin Brown says the issue of food wastage is increasingly important as the planet's population heads towards a predicted 9.5 billion people. "Somewhere between 30 and up to 50 percent of all food is wasted between it being grown, being harvested, transported and eventually us eating it – in that whole process coming up to half of it doesn’t actually get eaten," he said. He says a more efficient food production and distribution system would provide enough food for the planet's growing population. "We already use twice as much water for our agriculture as we use for all of our other human uses and so if we carry on using more in this way, we are going to run out of what is essentially drinking water," he said.

These statistics are all reasons as to where Australia’s food is really going and how much of it is going to waste. This proves that the excessive amounts of food that is being wasted, is what can make a difference in third world countries that are struggling through life. This is because whatever we are wasting could be going to those in need of food, as they are dying of hunger and malnutrition.
